The FBI has asked Apple to add a ‘backdoor’ to its iPhone OS.
Apple refused (see here).
If the FBI is successful in forcing Apple to add a backdoor (using All Writs Act of 1789), then what could be the implication for new cryptocurrency and blockchain issuers/software providers?
Preston Byrne from Eris Industries said to Bitlegal:
“Disaster waiting to happen for firms that specialise in cryptosystems if it’s allowed to stand [..]it would basically make it impossible to build useful blockchain software”.
This is about a wider global political debate surrounding governments wanting access to data and companies’ having to keep customer’s data safe. See EFF article here for a summary. Famed inventor of DigiCash, David Chaum, is suggesting a compromise federated backdoor system as a possible solution.
